It’s Not Just About Being on Social Media
⭐️ When people hear “digital presence,” they often only think about taking care of their social media profiles.
BUT what I have found time and time again: for many business owners, social media can feel overwhelming, time-consuming, or simply not the right fit.
Here’s the good news: your digital presence can thrive without it! While platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn are important, a digital presence encompasses much more. It includes your website, online reviews, blog posts, and any other footprint you leave on the internet. For female expats, this can be particularly relevant as you build a new network in a foreign country.

What is a Digital Presence?
Simply put, your digital presence is how visible you are online. When you go to a search engine (like Google or Bing) and put in your name or your business name… the results that show up, well, that is your digital presence.
This will show up listings and links that you control but also links that you don’t control – for example, newspaper articles with your name in the content, blogs on other people’s websites, or social media platforms (both yours and others). It can also mean images and videos with you in them. In addition, you will often find yourself mentioned in groups and organizations where you are a member and sometimes. You may even find a doppelganger… or worse, a doppelganger with a horrible reputation!
Navigating the digital world as a female expat can be work but navigating it with a wild card for a digital presence is absolutely daunting!!! Take control of your digital presence and enhance the possibility that it can open doors to countless opportunities. Whether you’re an individual seeking new connections or a business owner aiming to expand your client base, a robust digital presence is essential.
For an Individual, Especially Women
For women, having a strong digital presence can mean the difference between being overlooked and being recognized for your skills and experiences. It can help you connect with other expats, find job opportunities, and even stay in touch with loved ones back home. Your digital presence is your online resume—it’s how the world sees you.
But truly successful networking requires applying new approaches, including bolstering and monitoring your digital reputation. GirlPower Talk
For a Business
If you run a business, your digital presence is your storefront. It’s how potential customers find and judge you. A well-optimized website, positive reviews, and engaging content can attract clients, whereas poor online visibility can deter them. For female expat entrepreneurs, establishing a strong online identity can help overcome the challenges of running a business in a new country.
Why It Is Important
A solid digital presence builds credibility and trust. People are more likely to engage with you or your business if they can find positive information online. Here are some reasons why it’s crucial:
- Visibility: The more visible you are online, the more opportunities come your way.
- Credibility: A professional digital presence builds trust with your audience.
- Connections: It helps you connect with like-minded individuals and potential clients.
An Easy Step to Control Your Presence
Do a Search for Your Name and/or Business Name
The first step to controlling your digital presence is to know what’s out there.
Search your name and/or your business name on Google and other search engines (and do it in the ‘incognito mode’ to get an accurate reading). This will give you a baseline understanding of what others see when they look you up. Note any negative or outdated information that needs addressing.
In conclusion…
Enhancing your digital presence is not just a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have in today’s connected world. You can take control of your online identity and open up new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
