Meet Marina Calamai!
“From Cupcakes to Cupolas!”
“Researching” to learn more about Marina offered a delightful opportunity – to visit her atelier and spend more time learning about her background, inspiration and creative pieces…

Although Marina was “technically” born in Arezzo, but there is no question that she is definitely Fiorentina! Self-described as “inspired by nature”, Marina is an extremely versatile and multi-talented artist and designer. Her curiosity and fascination are multi-faceted and she is always exploring ways to “stimulate all of the senses” through her art.

Marina’s interests and collections are so eclectic! Literally from cupcakes (yes, there’s a story and a ring!) to other very whimsical and playful themes such as a collection dedicated to her favorite libations (hint: bubbles and martinis!) to her ecological, socially responsible themes and, of course, the influence of Florence and all things Tuscan… her virtuosity and talent is obvious!

Marina’ s collections reflect her passion for transforming metal into stories with layers of meaning. In other words, there’s always more than meets the eye. Truly an alchemist, her designs are intentionally evocative, whimsical and invitations to explore and find more (e.g. labyrinths) as well as examine timely social issues.

Jewelry making for over 20 years using the lost wax technique, she chose to work primarily with bronze, because of its feel and luster, as well as silver and gold. Marina has recently exhibited her “Olfactory Santo Spirito Bell Tower Pendant” and “Corona Venus 18K Gold Ring” last October during Milan Jewelry Week. But her creative talents reach far beyond “just” making jewelry! Painting, furniture design, and nature-based installations/performances are also avenues for her artistic expression. It is, of course, no surprise that she is commissioned to create unique pieces.

Since 2001, she has exhibited and performed in museums as well as private and public spaces and collaborated with well-known brands (e.g. Cantine Antinori, Andrea Bocelli Foundation and Fornaciai Art Gallery) creating unique designs and collaborative pieces.

Marina’s recent installation, titled “The Labyrinth of Love”, located in the historic gardens at Villa Favard di Rovezzano, is an ode to Mother Nature. The Eco-Art-System Association and its volunteers along with Marina, planted over 380 laurel plants. An interactive game “Eco-Oca”, located within the labyrinth, raises awareness about the environment and climate change. The installation was donated to the City of Florence and is under the European Committee of the Regions Patronage.

You are invited to visit Marina Calamai’s charming atelier on Via Santo Spirito, where her unique pieces are crafted and on display. Not only can you learn more about her collections, but you also can purchase Marina’s unique jewelry and homeware collections.
